Physical abuse

What to look out for

Physical abuse is not always present in intimate partner violence situations, but it tends to emerge over time. The abuser resorts to physical violence when they feel they cannot control their partner or when the victim shows too much independence for their liking. The abuser then becomes violent, resorting to blows and other forms of physical force.

Examples of physical abuse include:

  • Blocking the way or forcibly restraining someone
  • Pinning someone down or lifting them off their feet
  • Grabbing, shaking
  • Crushing their hand, twisting their arm or pulling their hair
  • Pushing or shoving
  • Scratching, biting or pinching
  • Slapping, punching or kicking
  • Hitting someone with an object or throwing an object at someone
  • Threatening or hurting with a weapon
  • Burning, choking or strangling
  • Tying up or locking in
