Saving Evidence of Abus

Who is this section for?

Are you a victim of intimate partner violence, or unsure whether you are? If so, you’re in the right place. Whether the abuse is physical, sexual, economic, or psychological, it’s important to start documenting the violence from the very first signs. If you have experienced physical or sexual assault, we strongly recommend getting a medical examination as soon as possible at the nearest hospital. To find out what steps to take after a sexual assault, you can access all the relevant information here. You will also find contact details for medical examinations on our How to find the help you need page.

Why saving evidence of abuse is important?

When you’re experiencing violence from a partner, it can be hard to see the situation clearly. You might wonder if you’re “crazy” or feel trapped — this is a consequence of the abuse. By documenting acts of violence as early as possible, you’ll be better able to identify the cycle of violence and assess whether your safety is at risk as the violence escalates. It will also give you evidence that can be used later, if you choose to press criminal charges or request a restraining order through the civil courts.

Where to store evidence of violence?

Storing evidence on your phone or computer can be risky — especially if your partner has access to your devices. You might lose sensitive personal data.
One safer option for example is the website with-you.ch, which offers a free digital safe where you can securely store evidence of abuse and harassment. This service is managed by the association Tech against violence.
We recommend reading the terms of use before uploading any information.
