What is intimate partner violence?<\/h2>

For some people, abuse begins with physical violence; for others it may be psychological. However, in most cases, the different types of abuse combine and escalate over time and become increasingly dangerous.<\/p>\n

Often, the person experiencing abuse is unable to articulate exactly what is happening to them. This is why it is important to understand what is meant by intimate partner violence and what you can do to find the right support and help.<\/p>\n

Psychological<\/span>

This subtle and often overlooked form of abuse includes degrading comments, humiliation, controlling behaviour and threats.<\/p><\/div>

When the abuser loses control over the relationship, they can become violent and resort to hitting, physically harming or restraining the victim.<\/p><\/div>

This is one the least spoken about and hidden types of intimate partner violence, involving humiliation and abuse, forced sexual relations, rape, and other non-consensual acts.<\/p><\/div>

This form of abuse comes in the form of restricting a partner's financial autonomy in order to exert control over them.<\/p><\/div>
